We help a major Middle Eastern energy company unify its on-premise systems into a secure, cloud-based platform. Designed for strict cybersecurity and governance compliance, it enables controlled data sharing, advanced analytics, and new monetization opportunities
A leading energy company in the Middle East faced a challenge shared by many large industrial organizations: data existed everywhere — in legacy systems, operational databases, and departmental silos — but nowhere as a single, coherent source of truth. Each business unit managed its own systems, with limited interoperability and strict internal security protocols. Yet the company’s vision was ambitious: to transform this dispersed information into a unified digital ecosystem capable of generating new business value through data monetization.
At Deep Kernel Labs, we see this challenge as emblematic of the modern energy transition. Companies are not just producers of energy; they are producers of data. Guided by our principle Data + AI = Value, we partnered with the client to design a secure, cloud-based platform that would unify enterprise data without compromising control — establishing the foundation for an ecosystem of use cases, analytics, and monetization opportunities.
The client’s landscape included dozens of critical systems: SCADA, ERP, GIS, CRM, billing, maintenance, and energy-trading applications — most of them on-premise, operating under strict security policies and network segmentation. Direct migration to the cloud was impossible due to regulatory, cybersecurity, and operational constraints. However, maintaining fragmentation was equally unsustainable: each new data project required custom integrations, duplicated logic, and complex approvals.
The real challenge was architectural: how to build a modern data platform in the cloud that could interact with all on-premise systems, remain compliant with the company’s security governance, and ensure that no data could leave the corporate perimeter unintentionally — all while enabling the agility and scalability required for advanced analytics, AI, and monetization.
In short, the solution had to balance two forces: openness for innovation and restriction for security.
Deep Kernel Labs approached the problem through its Smart Data framework — combining secure data engineering, federated integration, and governance-driven cloud architecture. The first step was a comprehensive data discovery and mapping process, identifying critical systems, data domains, and exchange boundaries. From there, we designed a hybrid architecture with a clear separation between data access, processing, and exposure layers.
Data ingestion was implemented through controlled connectors and APIs that ensured one-way, encrypted communication between on-premise systems and the cloud platform. Sensitive data never left internal systems; instead, it was represented through governed interfaces and metadata catalogs. Role-based access control, encryption, and continuous audit logging were embedded from the start, aligning with the client’s cybersecurity framework.
Once the secure data foundation was in place, we deployed scalable analytics and AI components that allowed the company to prototype use cases quickly: demand forecasting, asset-performance analytics, customer segmentation, and eventually, data products designed for monetization within the company’s ecosystem.
Smart Data for Data Monetization became the central platform that unified the client’s fragmented information landscape. Hosted securely in the cloud, it acts as the single intelligence layer connecting on-premise operational systems with digital applications, analytics tools, and external services — all under strict governance.
Through an intuitive interface and integrated data catalog, business units can now discover, request, and consume validated datasets. APIs expose relevant insights while respecting access boundaries. A dedicated governance dashboard provides visibility over data lineage, access logs, and compliance indicators. The platform supports both batch and real-time workflows, enabling continuous synchronization with legacy systems without disrupting operations.
With this foundation, the client can now develop and scale use cases for efficiency, customer experience, and new data-driven revenue models — creating an ecosystem where data becomes an asset to be used, shared, and monetized securely.
From silos to ecosystem: Smart Data for Data Monetization transforms fragmented on-premise data into a unified, secure, and interoperable digital environment.
From restriction to controlled innovation: Through hybrid architecture and strict governance, the company achieves agility without compromising security.
From data to value: Embodying DKL’s principle Data + AI = Value, the platform turns enterprise information into a monetizable strategic asset.
